Campamento Tortuguero!

We got to release baby sea turtles into the ocean today! There is a conservation out here that takes the sea turtle eggs once they are laid and moves them to a safer place where they won't be eaten or crushed by tourists. Then, once the baby sea turtles hatch, they invite the public to come down and release them out into the ocean.

It was such an amazing and educational experience. The release happens at sunset because that is when the babies have their best chance and less predators to snatch them on their first day in this world. Morbid I know, but facts are facts. Speaking of facts here is a good one for ya. 3 out of 100 baby sea turtles make it to adulthood. - Nolan

Carols, the baby turtle dude, told us we have to name them or they won't make it. My turtle's name is Delores Sanchez. she was slight, but you could tell she has a lot of heart. I gave her some sound advice about avoiding commercial fishing nets & predators and to remember to have fun out there, before setting her free. It really is something...holding those tiny little lives in your coconut before setting them free. Plus they are so stinking CUTE!!! I can't wait to do it again and/or volunteer with the organization in the future. ~ Bridget

I love a good fact. More facts, please! What an incredible experience—go Delores! In 80 years, some other turtle is going to ask her how she’s lived so long, and she’s gonna say “ya know, I got some great advice.” 🌊🐢
