Dia De Los Muertos Oct 27, Day of the Pets
Growing up in the United States I never knew much about Mexican culture and traditions. Now living in Mexico I crave the knowledge and customs. I want to know where I come from and what makes the beautiful people of Mexico so unique and so damn special.
Today begins the first day of Dia de Los Muertos (the day of the dead), which really is more of a celebration for the ones who have gone on that we loved so much.
October 27th starts the celebration with our precious pets that have crossed the marigold bridge. Today I honor, celebrate and welcome my dogs Whitney (she was my first), Sammy, and my mom’s dog Tully who always held a special place in my heart.
We are missing the flowers right now but hope to get some added by tomorrow. In Mexican tradition marigold pedals create a path to guide the departed. The tradition also includes placing their pictures on altars called an offenda, leaving. a bowl of water incase they are thirsty from their journey back to visit us, leaving a snack, and something personal if you have it.
I grew up with no knowledge of Dia de Los Muertos or what it was. Then when I found out about it I thought it sounded scary because of all the skeletons and graves I'd seen on tv and movies about it. Now as I'm learning more about my culture I think it's one of the most beautiful traditions we have. Not only is it a beautiful way to celebrate the ones we loved who are no longer here, but it is also a reminder that death comes for us all, but the love we shared remains in our hearts and memories.
Our offenda is not perfect. This is our first year taking part in the tradition. But we are learning, and happy for the opportunity to remember and celebrate loved ones who have gone on. - Nolan
I am honored to get to partake in this tradition. We planned for this before we moved so I got to bring some pictures of loved ones who have passed on. Nolan made the wooden picture and candle holders and I think that adds such a beautiful touch to our offrenda. No-one is truly gone if they are remembered. This year, I get to show that I remember. - Bridget
