FIFA World Cup 2026 Viva Mexico!

Being a Mexican American, who is now a Mexican Citizen I want to learn about my culture. I want to learn the traditions. I want to learn about the things that make my people who they are, for example delicious food, loud music, celebrating all night, and of course futbol!

I already knew Mexicans love futbol, so with the World Cup happening this year I was excited to watch some games and hopefully learn a lil bit about futbol. What I didn’t expect was the excitement of the entire country for the game. About a month before the games even started green jerseys started showing up everywhere. Every day I would see at least 2-3 people wearing Mexico jerseys around town, and as the games started I just started seeing it everywhere. So naturally we also got caught up in this wide spread futbol fever!

But the coolest thing about it was far more than simply futbol. It was pride in our country. It was pride in our team. And most of all it was the unity of the people because of the games. It literally felt like everyone in the country and many outside were excited for Mexico to be playing in the world cup. And then as the games started something crazy and unexpected happened (well crazy and unexpected to me at least). Fans started cheering and supporting teams besides their own. South Korea and Mexico had a special love affair that was insane to witness, and amazing to feel a part of. I personally watched probably more than half the games Telemundo played, and somehow always went hard for one of the teams playing and cussed the other with each game lol.

Bridget and I surprisingly got really into the games. I think we like it more than hockey now and can’t wait for the Women’s World Cup next year. - Nolan
